A Whole New (fisheye) World: Post 5: Fore!

I have two more posts for the AWN(f)W photoset. There is no better way to start the close out than underneath one of the most iconic gigantic golf balls in the world.

If you know anything about Orlando theme parks, you would know these two things: there’s a big castle at Magic Kingdom, and a huge white ball at EPCOT. Of course, this huge white ball is known as Spaceship Earth, and it is EPCOT’s version of Cinderella’s Castle… well, minus the fairytale, plus education.

Spaceship Earth has gotten a bit more hip over the years. The last major update to the ride saw Siemens do major overhauls to the pre and post show entertainment, which brought some much needed humor and fun to the ride. If you haven’t ridden it since 2008, you must give it another shot. I promise, it’s not as bad as your 5th grade Social Studies field trip. Oh, and for you Matrix nerds, there’s a bit of a Matrix twist towards the end of the ride before the grand view of “Spaceship Earth” (my favorite part).

This shot was, of course, taken underneath the ride. This area of the golf ball serves nicely as two purposes: 1) a wind tunnel, and 2) cover from the crazy Florida summer storms. Actually, it has a nice third purpose: 3) taking cool fisheye pictures, as evidenced in this shot. As a point of reference, the whole thing weighs over 15 million pounds. Wouldn’t be a good thing if it fell (understatement).

We usually don’t enter in the regular entrance to the park because our seasonal passes don’t cover the cost of parking, but we had gone to Magic Kingdom earlier, and you can use the paid parking at any other park on that day. Amazing, we’ve been going to Disney for years and had never known that. See, you do learn something new everyday at Disney.

There’s just one more picture to go in the photoset! Any guesses on what it may be? Leave your guess below, or on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SteveNotoPhoto (Like the page while you’re there:) )
